Braveheart Col M. N. Rai
On 26th January, Republic day of India, he was awarded Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) for his “professionalism and exemplary leadership”. According to officials, Colonel MN Rai had been “instrumental in eliminating four hardcore Hizbul terrorists, including its divisional commander, and apprehending nine over ground workers”. The YSM is awarded for the highest degree of distinguished service in a war or conflict.
On the very next day, he was killed in a gun battle with militants in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district. A tragedy to his family and nation. He was survived by wife Priyanka, daughters Alka (12) and Richa (9), and son Aditya (7). They were three brothers. One in CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and 2 in military.
Death can strike any time in life. What ever you do. And it changes the life of family and surrounding. What about the 11 year old daughter of colonel who must be tremendously happy when her father was awarded on 26th January and how suddenly that happiness shattered in just 24-hours. The way she grieved in front of public, cameras and higher military officials shows her love towards her father. What gives courage to a 11 year old girl to cry uncontrollably, uttering the regiment’s war cry, promising to join the army in the whats app status of her father:
Play your role in life with such passion, that even after the curtains come down, the applause doesn’t stop.
The last lesson Col taught her daughter was : Fly like a bird.
An Inspiration from a high rank officer for us, for the nation and for the humanity. RIP Colonel M. N. Rai.
